Certainty Commandment #1: Closer Over More
The human mindset often defaults to a craving for more. We assume that having more is the solution to everything. This mindset can lead us down paths filled with increased risk, volatility, and many sleepless nights. But Dan challenges this notion with a simple yet profound commandment: Every action we take needs to get us closer to what actually matters.
Instead of focusing on more, we need clarity on what we genuinely desire. It's not about playing someone else's game or living up to societal standards. It's about creating a system optimized for our unique goals, preferences, biases, and disposition. The focus should always be on the least amount of effort, the least amount of risk, and the most amount of options.
For example, if what you want is to spend more time with your family, you may quickly realize that taking on another client or project does not make sense for you right now.
This empowers you to say “no,” or restructure/counter-offer a proposition so that it becomes a better fit for you.
This philosophy resonates deeply, especially in today's fast-paced world where the allure of more is everywhere. But by embracing "Closer Over More", we can chart a path that aligns with our true desires, reducing unnecessary stress and uncertainty.
This simple yet profound concept can help you gain clarity, expel busy work, and appreciate what you already have, which is often more than you realize.
For a deeper dive into this commandment and its nuances, Dan has shared his insights on this topic with Forbes.
